Lee, F.N., 1969 [1970], Rainfall-runoff relations for southwestern Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Public Works Technical Report No. 2C, 91 p. This report is a companion report to technical report No. 2a, "Rainfall Runoff Relations for Southeastern Louisiana and Southwestern Mississippi", by A.J. Calandro. It provides a method of estimating runoff from rainfall in southwestern Louisiana. Rainfall, runoff, and storm duration data are included for 1,351 storms analyzed at 37 streamflow stations and 63 rainfall stations.

Sauer, V.B., 1969, Unit hydrographs for southwestern Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Public Works Technical Report No. 2d, 56 p. Unit hydrograph and base-flow recession data are provided for 27 stream gaging stations in southwestern Louisiana, an area of about 9,000 square miles. These data can be used at the individual sites to estimate, from rainfall excess, flood hydrographs resulting from large storms.

Sauer, V.B., 1970 [1971], Rainfall-runoff hydrograph relations for northern Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Public Works Technical Report No. 3, 33 p. Streamflow records from 22 gaging stations and more than 90 rain gages were used to study the relation between rainfall, rainfall excess, and runoff hydrographs in northern Louisiana. Rainfall excess can be estimated from rainfall by the use of an infiltration index, phi, which varies seasonally from 0.24 inch per hour in the winter to 0.7 inch per hour in the summer. The results are not precise; however, studies of more complicated techniques using various measures of antecedent conditions and storm duration did not offer significant improvements. Unit hydrographs were developed from the streamflow records and regionalized for use at any site in the study area.

Calandro, A.J., 1973, An analysis of stream temperatures in Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Public Works Technical Report No. 6, 16 p. Monthly temperature duration, average monthly temperatures, and monthly extremes are shown for nine stations throughout the state on the larger streams and rivers.

Martien, R.F., 1978, Water-quality characteristics of the Red River in Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works Water Resources Technical Report No. 16, 32 p. The average discharge of the Red River for the period 1928-75 was 24,900 cubic feet per second at Shreveport and 31, 900 cubic feet per second at Alexandria. The mean daily suspended-sediment discharge at Alexandria (1964-74) was 103,000 tons per day. Water-tracer studies were made to enable the estimation of travel-time, concentration, and duration of solutes injected into the river at any point on the river between Spring Bank ferry, AR., (river mile 334)and Moncla, La. (river mile 66). These estimates can be made for stable flow conditions ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 cubic feet per second at Shreveport (river mile 278).

Calandro, A.J., 1978, Time of travel of solutes in Louisiana streams: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works Water Resources Technical Report No. 17, 32 p. This report summarizes the travel time and dispersion of solutes in 18 streams in Louisiana that were measured by injecting a fluorescent water tracer. nine of the eighteen streams were studied through a range of discharges.

Lowe, A.S., 1979, Magnitude and frequency of floods for small watersheds in Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Highway Research Study No. GS-2H, 52 p.

Forbes, M.J., Jr., 1980, Low-flow characteristics of Louisiana streams: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works Water Resources Technical Report No. 22, 95 p. This report presents annual and monthly statistics of low flow for 114 streamflow stations and annual statistics for 245 stations (partial record) at which intermittent measurements of low flow have been made. For continuous-record stations these statistics were calculated using the log-Pearson type III distribution.

Lowe, A.S., 1980, Flood depth-frequency relations for Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works Water Resources Technical Report No. 23, 14 p. A study was made to define flood-prone areas by estimating the depth of floods on streams having recurrence intervals of 25, 50, and 100 years. Drainage-area size is the only independent variable required for estimating flood depth for natural streams in Louisiana.

Lee, F.N., 1985, Analysis of the low-flow characteristics of streams in Louisiana: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works Water Resources Technical Report No. 35, 41 p. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works, used geologic maps, soils maps, precipitation data, and low-flow data to define four hydrographic regions in Louisiana having distinct low-flow characteristics. Equations were derived, using regression analyses, to estimate the 7Q2, 7Q10, and 7Q20 flow rates for basically unaltered stream basins smaller than 525 square miles. Independent variables in the equations include drainage area (square miles), mean annual precipitation index (inches), and main channel slope (feet per mile).

Lee, F.N., 1985, Floods in Louisiana, magnitude and frequency--Fourth edition: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Water Resources Technical Report No. 36, 30 p. The magnitude and frequency of floods are presented in this report for 287 streamflow-gaging sites in Louisiana and bordering sites in the adjacent states of Mississippi and Arkansas. Regression equations, using 217 of these sites that are basically natural and unaltered and with drainage areas less than 3,000 square miles, were developed using multiple regression techniques and were used to estimate discharges for return periods of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years.

Ground water is the source of supply for 251 of these water systems and surface water is the source for 14. The remaining two systems are served by both ground-water and surface-water sources.

This report is an index for all sites for which streamflow and water-quality data have been collected and for sites where data are still being collected by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Water Resources Special Reports

Adams, P.A., 1989, Water resources publications of the Louisiana district of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1904-89: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Water Resources Special Report No. 5, 104 p. The U.S. Geological Survey conducts three types of water-resources activities in Louisiana - data collection, interpretive investigations, and research. The water-resources data and the results of the interpretive investigations and research are published by either the U.S. Geological Survey or cooperating agencies. This report lists publications resulting from water-resources activities of the Louisiana District of the U.S. Geological Survey from 1904 to 1989.

Lovelace, J.K., 1991, Water use in Louisiana, 1990: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Water Resources Special Report No. 6, 131. In 1990, approximately 9,400 million gallons per day (Mgpd) of water was withdrawn from ground- and surface-water sources in Louisiana. Total ground-water withdrawals were 1,300 Mgpd and total surface-water withdrawals were 8,000 Mgpd. From 1985 to 1990, ground-water withdrawals in Louisiana decreased by 6.8 percent, and surface-water withdrawals decreased by 10 percent. Total water withdrawals in Louisiana decreased by 10 percent from 1985 to 1990. Water withdrawal totals in 1990 for various categories of use were as follows: public supply, 630 Mgpd; industry, 2,500 Mgpd; power generation, 5,000 Mgpd; rural domestic, 50 Mgpd; livestock, 8.9 Mgpd; rice irrigation, 650 Mgpd; general irrigation, 62 Mgpd; and aquaculture, 540 Mgpd. Forty-five percent of all ground-water withdrawn was from the Chicot aquifer system.
